Lost Tribes of Israel

A scattered people, a living promise

“He who scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him as a shepherd keeps his flock.” — Jeremiah 31:10

Introduction

History

From unity to dispersion

United kingdom

Saul, David, Solomon: the twelve tribes under a single crown.

Division (1 Kings 12)

Ten tribes in the north (Israel), two in the south (Yehudah).

Assyrian conquest (722 BC)

The northern kingdom falls; the ten tribes are deported (2 Kings 17).

Dispersion

The tribes vanish from the annals, scattered among the nations.

Promise of gathering

Isaiah 11, Jeremiah 31, Ezekiel 37, Amos 9: the return is promised.

1 Kings 12: at Solomon’s death, the people ask Rehoboam to lighten their burdens. Refused, the kingdom tears apart: ten tribes follow Jeroboam (the kingdom of Israel), Judah and Benjamin remain faithful to the house of David (the kingdom of Yehudah).

2 Kings 17: the kings of Israel multiply idolatry. In 722 BC, Shalmaneser V and then Sargon II besiege Samaria, deport the Israelites to Halah, Habor, the river of Gozan and the cities of the Medes, and replace the population with foreign settlers — hence the Samaritans.

The dispersion is not the end: it is the fulfilment of the Torah’s warnings (Deuteronomy 28:64) — and the prelude to the promise of gathering (Deuteronomy 30:3-5).

Ezekiel 37

The two sticks of Ezekiel

Symbol of reunification

— Ézéchiel 37:17

Ezekiel 37:15-28: the prophet receives a prophetic gesture. “Take one stick, and write on it: For Judah and for the children of Israel his companions. Then take another stick, and write on it: For Joseph, the stick of Ephraim, and for all the house of Israel his companions. Join them one to another into one stick, that they may become one in your hand.”

The meaning is explained by God himself: “Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph… and I will put them with him, even with the stick of Judah. I will make them one stick, and they shall be one in my hand” (37:19). Two nations, one people, one king, one covenant: “My servant David shall be their prince, and they shall all have one shepherd” (37:24).

The two sticks are the visual seal of Danism: the division is not final, the reunification is promised.

The key verses

Jérémie 31:10

The gathering is one of the most constant promises of the Scriptures:

  • Deuteronomy 30:3-5 — “The Lord your God will gather you again… and bring you into the land which your fathers possessed.”
  • Isaiah 11:11-13 — the hand of the Lord stretches out “a second time” to redeem the remnant of his dispersed people; Ephraim’s jealousy and Judah’s hostility come to an end.
  • Jeremiah 31:9-10 — “He who scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him as a shepherd keeps his flock.”
  • Ezekiel 37:15-28 — the two sticks become one stick; the two nations become one nation.
  • Amos 9:14-15 — the people replanted in their land will no longer be uprooted.
Discernment

Where are the lost tribes?

Faith, tradition, hypothesis, research, proof

The question “where are they?” calls for a grid of discernment. Every claim falls into one of these five approaches:

  1. Faith — believing in the promised return, because the Scriptures promise it.
  2. Tradition — a people reports an origin handed down orally from generation to generation.
  3. Hypothesis — a plausible conjecture, still without solid evidence.
  4. Historical research — converging clues (history, linguistics, customs) supported by documentation.
  5. Established proof — a verified and recognised demonstration.

Official position of ADIRTPI: faith and research advance together, but one does not replace the other. The assembly refuses any arbitrary attribution of a tribe to a people, any sensationalism, any presentation of a hypothesis as proof. Discernment comes first: “Test all things, and hold firmly that which is good” (1 Thessalonians 5:21).

And Dan, in all this?

“Dan shall have a portion, from the eastern side to the western side.” — Ezekiel 48:1
